Textbooks

Graduate students are responsible for purchasing their own textbooks. To find a list of books that are needed for Applied Computer Science courses, log into Northwest Online.

Learn to Cook

For years you've been used to homemade food and have relied on someone to cook for you. Once you come here to the United States, you are on your own! So learn how to cook, and get used to the taste of your food. Don’t fall under the impression that your roommates or friends will cook for you.

Medical Check-Up

Eye and dental check up are necessary in my opinion, as they are very costly here in the US. If you are using spectacles, get two to three pairs of glasses and if you use contact lenses, get the required prescriptions and extra pairs.

First Aid Kit

You can select medicines according to your health condition and piece them together to make a comprehensive First Aid Kit. It is important that you carry a prescription along with you. General medicines that could help you to protect from viral fever, cold, body and muscular pains, head ache, skin allergy and eye infection. Things like paracetimol (crocin), combiflamin or any other pain killers, cold act or coldarin or any anti-cold medicines are necessary.

Clothes

Every one knows to get some clothes, specially pants, shirts, jeans and t-shirts. But things to bring for sure are: Umbrella, Thermal wear, sweaters, Handkerchief, undergarments (bring many in number as students in general laundry every fortnight). Do not forget to carry some traditional wear with you (even girls), the quantity of traditional wear is up to you. If you are into games or sports or athletics, get some track suits or sports wear. Don not spend a lot on clothes, there two main reasons: you might feel a change in the trend and fashion here, and you might put on weight.

Footwear

Shoes

If you have serious snowfall at your place, do not forget to buy sketchers or snow grip shoe. I would suggest taking the woodland brands.

Get a normal sports shoe, if you are much into games and sports get shoe that suit to your game.

Formal shoe are a must. The color is of your choice.

Sandals

Flip-flops or chappals are necessary for daily use. Kholapuri or footwear suitable for your traditional wear.

Miscellaneous Items

Shaving kit and blades (get a good stock, they are costly in the US, specially the razors)
Brush and toothpaste (also expensive in the US)
Gloves, muffler and/or monkey cap to help you stay warm in winter
Shampoo
Towels
After shave
Bedsheets (preferably two thick and two thin sets)

Utensils

Plates to eat, fiber plates are advisable as they are easy to clean
Glasses
Cups and bowls
Non stick serving spoons
Couple of cooking vessels
Pressure cooker - 3 or 5 liters
Cooker containers and spares (rings and valves)
Non-stick frying pan with turner
Cutting board for vegetables
1 pressure pan (Prestige), ask your prospective roommate to get one too

Food Items

Spices, Tealeaves, Masalas, Haldi, Dhania, red chilly, Instant masalas, etc.
Mustard packet
Tamarind paste
Different dals in small quantity for initial use
Indian instant coffee + Indian tea (it takes time to get used to the American stuff) if you are regular tea drinker, until you don’t shift to alcohol
Elaichi, clove, cinnamon
Get a couple of bags each of haldi, red chilly powder, Garam masala, Dhania, Pickle bottles (if you have enthu, but preferably get sealed ones), some rice for a couple of days, Moong Dal. Bring approx. 1-month supply of masalas.
Get all the spices that are used to. Get used to your self cooked dishes before you come here.
Try getting some ready-to-eat stuff. You might use these when you are getting late for your class or work.
