International Space Station Downlink

Local students to speak with orbiting astronauts

A little bit of the final frontier is coming to Northwest.

Between 9 and 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27, selected students from the Northeast Nodaway R-V school district, Horace Mann Laboratory School, the Missouri Academy of Science, Mathematics and Computing and Northwest Missouri State University will spend about 20 minutes talking to astronauts aboard the International Space Station.

This question-and-answer session will take place in the Ron Houston Center for the Performing Arts, where the students will see and hear the astronauts via a satellite downlink. The event will be televised live over NASA TV, which can be accessed at www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv.

Most of the students participating in the session will come from Northeast Nodaway. One student each will be selected from Horace Mann, the Academy and the University. Answering student questions from aboard the space station will be Expedition 18 astronauts Cmdr. Mike Fincke and Dr. Sandy Magnus.

Questions from students wishing to participate will be competitively selected. University students should submit questions via this website which also contains information on how to word questions as well as links to NASA sites with information about the International Space Station and America's space program.

This is the first time in the eight-year history of the NASA school satellite downlink program that a Missouri school has had the opportunity to participate.
