Notebook Project

Notebook Project

The notebook project will allow students greater portability of data.
--Dr. Jon Rickman, VP of Information Systems

By fall 2005, Northwest will provide a new notebook computer to every enrolled student living in campus housing.

The notebook initiative, which was approved by the Board of Regents on February 7, 2004, is the brainchild of Dr. Jon Rickman, Vice-President of Information Systems.

According to Dr. Rickman, the pilot will be launched this fall for students living in the new apartments and suites.

"Students living in the new apartments and suites will start receiving their notebook computers in August," Rickman said.

The new notebook computers will have the following specifications:

  • Gateway 305e Notebook
  • 14.1” inch LCD screen
  • 20gb hard-drive
  • DVD-ROM drive
  • 2.5Ghz, 256MB RAM
  • 10/100 Ethernet and 802.11b/g wireless network adapters
  • 56k modem
  • Windows XP Professional OS
  • Microsoft Office 2003

In addition to the notebook computer, students will also be issued a backpack/tote bag to carry it in. The backpack/tote will be black with a Northwest logo.

Information Systems will begin issuing notebooks to students on August 17-20 and 25-27, 2004. Distribution to students living in the other residence halls will begin in 2005. Students will be notified by email or campus mail about when they can obtain their new notebook computer.

According to Rickman, insurance will also be available for students who wish to protect their notebooks in case of damage or theft. For more information about Northwest notebook computers, go to the following web site:
