Network & Server Services is the administrative branch of Northwest Missouri State University's Information Systems Department. Network & Server are responsible for the installation and upkeep of the network infrastructure and virtually all of the mission critical servers on campus. Network & Server also help research the feasibility of new systems for the university's numerous faculty, staff, and laboratory facilities.
We are committed to providing Northwest Missouri State with the highest level of hardware, software, network, and general information technology support while being ever cognizant of expenses. We also focus on perpetually upgrading our collective proficiency in the Information Technology Field.
Network & Server are responsible for the installation and upkeep of the Exchange Server, which allows university faculty and staff to communicate via Web-Based Mail and Outlook.

The firewall has been installed at Northwest because of several incidents where servers had been compromised or services interrupted by attacks from outside entities. These attacks involved heavy port scanning and the use of Northwest systems to attack other locations on the Internet. Advisors from the FBI, MOREnet and the financial auditors have unanimously agreed that Northwest should install a firewall.
The firewall is designed to protect internal private users from IP based attacks originating from the Internet and therefore regrettably limits some Internet services.
The following policy statement was developed by the Northwest Firewall Advisory Committee. The statement outlines the guidelines used to administer the firewall.
Requested and approved ports will be opened for outgoing IP TCP/UDP traffic, internal private host requests will be allowed to pass through the firewall, their immediate response will be returned to the internal private requesting host. All internal private hosts will appear to have the IP address of the external firewall network interface as seen by the external network, this is referred to as Network Address Translation (NAT).
All incoming traffic from the external network that is not in response to an internal private host request will be blocked.
Requests from external network hosts will be allowed to access public services on public servers through associated ports (i.e. web services through port 80 TCP).
The procedure for requesting that a port or service be allowed to pass through the firewall from the internal private or external network is found on the Online Support Firewall Ports Request page. The request will be researched then submitted to the Network Security Council for review and approval.

All requests for game port openings on the firewall will be handled on an individual basis. The requested ports will not be opened if they present known security holes. The requested ports may be opened if the student requesting them has followed all of the Northwest Missouri State University policies on the Computing Policies website and if the ports are not a known threat. In the event of network problems, these game ports will be closed immediately and without notification. All requested game ports that are opened will be closed at the end of the Spring term. A new game port request will have to be filed after June.
