Organizational communication focuses on how individuals create, send and receive messages within an organization. The focus of this major is to develop effective communication within an organization. Professionals in the field analyze how people send messages and how those messages affect individuals' perception of the organization. They identify problems in the communication flow within an organization, plan means of correcting those problems and train and develop the communication ability of members of the organization.
In this cross-disciplinary major students will study in the areas of management and organizational systems theory, public speaking, writing, persuasion, interpersonal communication, group behavior and leadership. Additional areas of study focus on psychology, organizational policy and decision-making, and human resource management.
Students interested in studying organizational communication may elect to pursue either a Comprehensive Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree.
