Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation-time of flight - mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) is a relatively novel technique for rapid characterization of biomolecules. The method is used for detection and characterization of large biomolecules with molecular masses between 400 and 350,000 Da. It is a very sensitive method, which allows the detection of low (10-15 to 10-18 mole) quantities of sample with an accuracy of 0.1 - 0.01 %. Applications include analysis, identification and screening of biomolecules (such as proteins, peptides, proteins, peptides, oligosaccharides and oligonucleotides and sugars) and large organic molecules (such as polymers, dendrimers and other macromolecules).
