Missouri Arboretum

River Birch, Betula nigra

Native. Can grow up to 80 feet.  Leaves alternate and simple, 1-3 inches long with doubly toothed margins.  Thin, peeling bark is pink to reddish-brown on young trees.  Likes wet springs but can tolerate dry summers.  Needs a pH of 6.5 or lower.  Arching branches.
