Flowering Dogwood, Cornus florida

Native.  Leaves opposite and simple, 3-6 inches long.  Scarlet color in fall.  Small green and white flowers surrounded by petal-like bracts.  They later bear small bright red fruit clusters.  Flower buds indentifiable on winter twigs.  Mature bark is black and brown scaly blocks.  Used as ornamental trees.  15-40 feet in height.
