Japanese Larch

Larix kaempferi

Japan. Leaves: 1 to 1 1/4" long and 1/25" wide; on short spurs 40 or more together, 1 1/2" or longer; upper side of both kinds flat, glaucous, underside keeled and with 2 white bands, deep green. Fruit: Cones stalked, 1 to 1 1/2" long and almost as wide, scales keeled forming a rosette appearance. CULTURE: Readily transplanted when dormant; should have sufficient moisture, well-drained, tolerant of shallow, acid soils; intolerant of shade, chalk soils and polluted areas.
