Northwest Missouri State University

College of Education and Human Services

Dr. Joyce PiveralThrough challenging times, there are difficult decisions to be made along with new opportunities. I wanted to take a moment to share the changes taking place in the College of Education and Human Services.

Starting July 1, the new Department of Professional Education will include the former Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Leadership departments, as well as the Horace Mann Laboratory School. The department will also include the Phyllis and Richard Leet Center for Children and Families, formerly the Early Care and Education Laboratory Center. There is a great deal of excitement about the new Leet Center that will open this fall on the first floor of Horace Mann. The alignment of education laboratories and the two education departments will allow for greater collaboration and resource sharing.

Other changes with the College of Education and Human Services include the elimination of the B.S.Ed. in Family and Consumer Sciences. We did this due to the low enrollments in the program.  While this is sad news, four of the five programs within FACS will be realigned. The growing dietetics and nutrition program will move to the Department of Health and Human Services; the merchandising program will move to the Department of Business; the early childhood program will move to the previously mentioned Department of Professional Education; and the child and families studies program will move to the Department of Behavioral Sciences. The FACS Bachelor of Science in Education degree will be eliminated, but we are working with students to assist them with this transition.

Northwest is committed to maintaining quality education for our students, and every decision has been made keeping students at the forefront.

Warmest regards,

Joyce Piveral
