The St. Joseph Chapter started the year with a holiday dinner in January at the Ground Round. Members re-gifted unwanted holiday gifts during an exchange. In February, the annual Mardi Gras dinner was at Boudreaux's. St. Joseph Beverage hosted a March Madness pizza party, which is the chapter's most popular event of the year. April's gathering included dinner at Bandana's with the chapter favorite, LRC game. The chapter concluded its season with a luau at the home of Dave '69 and Ann Eilers '76 Newman. The chapter also enjoyed partnering with the Northwest Alumni Association on the Championship Trophy Tour in February and the June 21 Northwest Night at the St. Joseph Mustangs. The St. Joseph Chapter kicked off the new academic year in September with a happy hour at Buffalo Wild Wings followed by a Mexican fiesta at La Mesa in October. Alumni and friends gathered for the sixth annual barn party at the home of Vic ’70, ’71 and Denise Kretzschmar in November and helped the chapter raise money to adopt a needy family for the holidays. The chapter also hosted a pregame party at Pizza Shoppe before the Northwest vs. Missouri Western football game and tailgated before every home football game. A new partnership was created between the St. Joseph Chapter and the local Rally House where the chapter hosted an exclusive Bearcat shopping event that helped raise money for scholarships and community service projects. The St. Joseph Chapter started the New Year off by re-gifting those unwanted holiday gifts at a dinner at the Ground Round. In February, the chapter had its largest turnout at the annual Mardi Gras social at Boudreaux’s. St. Joseph Beverage hosted the March game night social and potluck, and the second annual "Minute to Win It" event was full of laughs as members competed in some ridiculous events! The chapter kicked off the summer with a luau at the home of Jerry and Susan McKnight ’74 Clevenger. The St. Joseph Chapter invites all area alumni and friends to join in the festivities and also follow the chapter on Facebook at Northwest Missouri State University Alumni and Friends St. Joseph Chapter.
The St. Joseph Chapter’s Vic ’70, ’71 and Denise Bower ’71 Kretzschmar hosted an annual barn party in September, complete with wooden horse races. The following month, members participated in a restaurant hop, visiting several establishments in St. Joseph. The chapter hosted a tailgate prior to the last regular season football game of the year and also sponsored and shopped for a family that was adopted for the holidays.
The St. Joseph Chapter kicked off 2012 with dinner at Geneo’s Pizza and Pub. Chapter members also celebrated Mardi Gras at Boudreaux’s and enjoyed a "Minute-to- Win-It" game night at Bandana’s Barbecue in April. Members also assisted with the reception celebrating the relocation of Northwest’s St. Joseph Center. Jerry and Susan McKnight ’74 Clevenger hosted the chapter’s annual luau in June.
Members of the St. Joseph Chapter opened up their homes for a progressive dinner in November where donations were collected for the Second Harvest Food Bank. A potluck dinner was hosted by Dr. Mark '70 and Vicki Horton '71 Hargens in January, and the Annual Mardi Gras Social took place at Boudreaux's Cajun Restaurant this spring. There was a great turnout for the chapter's retirement dinner honoring Coach Mel Tjeerdsma and his wife, Carol, at the Pony Express Museum. In April, Northwest's St. Joseph Center joined the chapter in organizing a welcome reception for the football and cheerleading coaching staffs. Dave '69 and Ann Eilers '76 Newman hosted the chapter's annual alumni luau to kick off the start of summer. The summer was filled with a trip to the St. Joseph Mustangs and Kansas City T-Bones baseball games, and the chapter conducted its first alumni golf tournament to support Northwest scholarships.
Members of the St. Joseph Chapter attended a St. Joseph Mustangs baseball game last summer and in September organized a watch party at Buffalo Wild Wings for the Bearcat football game against the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Vic '70, '71 and Denise Bower '71 Kretzschmar hosted a fall barn party that included country dance lessons. The chapter members also attended College Day at Arrowhead in October and cheered on the Kansas City Chiefs. Additionally, the chapter gathers for monthly socials at Buffalo Wild Wings to help raise money for its scholarship fund. The St. Joseph Chapter had a Cajun Mardi Gras celebration at Boudreaux's in February, and Oscar Hansen '73, owner of Smooth Endings, hosted a wine tasting for the chapter in March. The following month, dance instructors Mark and Janice Mallon taught chapter members the waltz and fox trot. Mardi Gras and St. Patrick's Day were celebrated by members of the St. Joseph Chapter, and in April, Mark '76 and Cindy Pickerel hosted a wine and cheese tasting party at their home. Alumni in the St. Joseph area are invited to attend chapter socials on the second Friday of the month. A progressive dinner in November for members of the St. Joseph Chapter took place at the homes of Jim and Patty Bolin '71 Roach, Mark '76 and Cindy Pickerel, Mark '70 and Vicki Horton '71 Hargens and Kyle and Anitra Germer '05, '07 Clark. In addition to food and fellowship, participants also contributed money for the Second Harvesters Food Bank. In December, chapter members met at a local restaurant to cheer on the Bearcats during the national championship football game.
Members of the St. Joseph Chapter attended a family picnic in August, Vic '70, '71 and Denise Bower '71 Kretzschmar hosted a barn party in September, and the Second Harvest Food Bank received canned food items from chapter members in November. The St. Joseph Chapter gathered at Northwest's downtown St. Joseph Center for an internet basketball watch party. The attendees toured the facility and met with Northwest representatives on the benefits and offerings of the new satellite academic facility. The chapter also welcomed new alumni to the area during a Mardi Gras celebration.
The St. Joseph Chapter has been working to establish funding for a perpetual scholarship to be presented each year to an incoming freshman. Donations are being solicited and fund-raising events are being developed. One such fundraiser involves raffling a football signed by the players and coaches of the 2006 Northwest football team. The drawing will be conducted at halftime of this fall's first home football game.
Northwest alumni and friends attended a February social with a Mardi Gras theme, complete with beads and masks, at Boudreaux's Louisiana Seafood and Steaks Restaurant.
Northwest President Dr. Dean L. Hubbard and his wife, Aleta, were guests at April's meeting where Hubbard discussed growth and changes at Northwest.
Chapter members participated in St. Joseph's annual Apple Blossom Parade in May.
Doug Schmitz is the chapter's new president, and chapter member Mark Pickerel now serves on the Northwest Alumni Association's national board.
The St. Joseph Alumni and Friends Chapter teamed up with Northwest's Office of Admissions and staffed a booth at "Rock Off!", an event featuring several live local and regional bands and exhibitors geared toward high school students. The chapter also welcomed Matt Baker, Northwest's director of residential life, to its January social. Baker discussed the University's current housing demands and plans.
Northwest President Dr. Dean L. Hubbard attended the St. Joseph Alumni and Friends Chapter meeting in April and gave an update on happenings at the University. This annual event followed the March monthly social where the St. Joseph Chapter guest speakers included area legislators.
The St. Joseph Chapter meets at 6 p.m. on the second Friday of each month at the Stoney Creek Inn. Chapter members pledged $300 and participated in a leukemia/cancer "Light The Night Walk" in September and also were on the Alumni Association's float in the Northwest Homecoming parade. The chapter sponsored a bus to the Arrowhead game, and there was a watch party for the national championship football game. In May, the chapter will have a float in the Apple Blossom Parade and will host Summer Bash in St. Joseph on July 28-29.
