Summer 2009
Mardi Gras and St. Patrick’s Day were celebrated by members of the St. Joseph Chapter, and in April, Mark ’76 and Cindy Pickerel hosted a wine and cheese tasting party at their home. Alumni in the St. Joseph area are invited to attend chapter socials on the second Friday of the month. For more information, contact Dave Price ’70, the chapter’s president, at dprice@amfam.com.

A wine and cheese tasting event took place for members of the St Joseph Chapter. Alumni were asked to bring a wine and cheese of their choice along with a fact card for each item. Throughout the evening the attendees were encouraged to read the cards, and a trivia contest was held at the conclusion of the evening.

A progressive dinner in November for members of the St. Joseph Chapter took place at the homes of Jim and Patty Bolin ’71 Roach, Mark ’76 and Cindy Pickerel, Mark ’70 and Vicki Horton ’71 Hargens and Kyle and Anitra Germer ’05, ’07 Clark. In addition to food and fellowship, participants also contributed money for the Second Harvesters Food Bank. In December, chapter members met at a local restaurant to cheer on the Bearcats during the national championship football game.
Winter 2008
Members of the St. Joseph Chapter attended a family picnic in August, Vic ’70, ’71 and Denise Bower ’71 Kretzschmar hosted a barn party in September, and the Second Harvest Food Bank received canned food items from chapter members in November. Future plans include a trip to Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza. The St. Joseph Chapter gathered at Northwest’s downtown St. Joseph Center for an internet basketball watch party. The attendees toured the facility and met with Northwest representatives on the benefits and offerings of the new satellite academic facility. The chapter also welcomed new alumni to the area during a Mardi Gras celebration.
The St. Joseph Chapter celebrated Mardi Gras at Boudreaux’s, a Cajun restaurant in downtown St. Joseph, to welcome new alumni to the area.
Members of the St. Joseph Chapter gathered more than 45 pounds of canned food items for the local food bank, challenging each chapter to do that or more for each chapter’s community food bank.

The St. Joseph Chapter has been working to establish funding for a perpetual scholarship to be presented each year to an incoming freshman. Donations are being solicited and fund-raising events are being developed. One such fundraiser involves raffling a football signed by the players and coaches of the 2006 Northwest football team. The drawing will be conducted at halftime of this fall’s first home football game.
Northwest alumni and friends attended a February social with a Mardi Gras theme, complete with beads and masks, at Boudreaux’s Louisiana Seafood and Steaks Restaurant.
Northwest President Dr. Dean L. Hubbard and his wife, Aleta, were guests at April’s meeting where Hubbard discussed growth and changes at Northwest.
Chapter members participated in St. Joseph’s annual Apple Blossom Parade in May.
Doug Schmitz is the chapter’s new president, and chapter member Mark Pickerel now serves on the Northwest Alumni Association’s national board.

The St. Joseph Alumni and Friends Chapter teamed up with Northwest’s Office of Admissions and staffed a booth at “Rock Off!”, an event featuring several live local and regional bands and exhibitors geared toward high school students. The chapter also welcomed Matt Baker, Northwest’s director of residential life, to its January social. Baker discussed the University’s current housing demands and plans.

The St. Joseph Chapter recently honored dedicated “friends” of the chapter: Frances Fine (wife of Marvin Fine ’64), Cindy Pickerel (wife of Mark Pickerel ’76), Jim Roach (husband of Patty Bolin Roach ’71) and Tammie Schmitz (wife of Doug Schmitz ’92).

Northwest President Dr. Dean L. Hubbard attended the St. Joseph Alumni and Friends Chapter meeting in April and gave an update on happenings at the University. This annual event followed the March monthly social where the St. Joseph Chapter guest speakers included area legislators.
The St. Joseph Chapter meets at 6 p.m. on the second Friday of each month at the Stoney Creek Inn. Chapter members pledged $300 and participated in a leukemia/cancer "Light The Night Walk" in September and also were on the Alumni Association's float in the Northwest Homecoming parade. The chapter sponsored a bus to the Arrowhead game, and there was a watch party for the national championship football game. In May, the chapter will have a float in the Apple Blossom Parade and will host Summer Bash in St. Joseph on July 28-29.
The Northwest Missouri State University Alumni Association is establishing alumni chapters worldwide. Organized by alumni volunteers and supported by the Office of Alumni Relations, these chapters sponsor a variety of activities for alumni to get together socially and stay abreast of news from Northwest Missouri State University.
