The Annual Anniversary Social for the Southern Iowa Chapter was May 10 at the Fireside Grill in Diagonal. Rod Barr ’87, ’95, ’09, chair of the Northwest Department of Agricultural Sciences, and Bob Machovsky, Northwest’s director of alumni relations and annual gifts, were special guests for the evening. During the summer, the chapter participated in several parades to promote Northwest. Last summer, the Southern Iowa Chapter had an entry in the Lenox Rodeo Parade as well as a pizza supper before its August board meeting. Several chapter members also took part in the annual Diagonal Labor Day Parade. Before Northwest’s Family Weekend football game, the chapter presented Jodi Gnader of Council Bluffs, Iowa, with the Northwest T-shirt quilt she won in the chapter’s fundraiser. The quilt was made by Joen Gross Brown ’69. A family bowling party is being planned, and the annual anniversary social will take place in April. The Southern Iowa Chapter hosted its annual social in April at the Crestmoor Golf Club in Creston, Iowa. Special guests from Northwest included Polly Parsons Howard ’00, ’09, Brenda Untiedt ’00, ’09, Dr. Matt Baker, Jill Wood Baker ’87, ’01, Scott Nielson ’01 and Laurie Drummond Long ’92. Three incoming freshmen from Creston and Mount Ayr also attended with their parents. During the event, the chapter presented a check to officially endow the Southern Iowa Alumni and Friends Chapter Scholarship. The first scholarship will be awarded to a southern Iowa student for the 2014-2015 academic year. The chapter also concluded its Bearcat T-shirt quilt and autographed football raffle. All proceeds from the raffle went to the chapter scholarship fund. Chapter members assisted at the Northwest men’s and women’s basketball games during Northwest Alumni Association Day at Bearcat Arena. The Southern Iowa Chapter hosted a family evening in August where 40 alumni and friends of all ages enjoyed swimming, games and food. The Northwest men’s and women’s basketball coaches and their families were the special guests. The chapter members attended Encore performances on campus in October and November. Members also participated in the Northwest Homecoming parade and activities in November. In April, the chapter will host its anniversary social and will volunteer for the Special Olympics. The chapter also raffled a Bearcat quilt made from T-shirts donated by its members and assembled by Joen Gross Brown ’69 of Mount Ayr. The proceeds benefit the chapter’s scholarship fund for a student from the Southern Iowa Chapter area.
The Southern Iowa Chapter celebrated its anniversary with an April 20 social in Lenox, Iowa. Guest speakers were Wren Baker, Northwest director of athletics, and Dr. Arley Larson, associate professor of agricultural sciences. Chapter members helped with the Special Olympics and the Ringgold County Cares food packaging event in Mt. Ayr, Iowa, and participated in several parades during the summer. Coming up, the chapter members look forward to hosting the Northwest basketball coaches.
Members of the Southern Iowa Chapter participated in several local parades last summer and fall, including the Northwest Homecoming Parade. In August, the chapter sponsored a poker tournament to raise money for the chapter scholarship. The chapter also hosted a family bowling night and had displays at the local high school basketball games. The chapter plans to help with the Special Olympics again this year, host a wine and cheese event and organize its annual anniversary dinner. Several Southern Iowa Chapter members attended the Alumni Awards Banquet to support their chapter's past president Dennis Bunch '69, '76, who received the Turret Service Award. The chapter also participated in a few parades throughout the summer, and members enjoyed attending the Hunt Family concert, as part of the University's Encore Series, at the Ron Houston Center in November. This spring, chapter members packaged food for Kids Against Hunger and helped with the Special Olympics. In addition, members gathered for an April social to celebrate the chapter's anniversary. The Southern Iowa Chapter helped with the Special Olympics at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa. Chapter members also packaged food for Haiti through the Kids Against Hunger program in Mount Ayr, Iowa. The annual anniversary social was April 16 in Creston, Iowa. Bearcat football coach Mel Tjeerdsma and Northwest athletics director Dr. Bob Boerigter were the evening's featured speakers, and they were joined by three Bearcat football players. The chapter was able to add more than $650 to the scholarship fund. Chapter members participated in several parades throughout southern Iowa, proudly displaying their chapter banner, and also enjoyed a family picnic. The Southern Iowa Chapter volunteered at Kids Against Hunger in Mt. Ayr, Iowa, packaging more than 2,000 meals of rice, soy and dried vegetables to be sent to starving people throughout the world. During the summer, the chapter participated in parades in Lenox, Clearfield, Diagonal and Sharpsburg, Iowa, spreading the word about Northwest. Watch parties were held for several Bearcat football games, including the national championship, and a family picnic was well attended in August where young and old had fun swimming, playing games and socializing. Members of the chapter also marched with the alumni float in the Northwest Homecoming parade. The chapter hosted the Annual Anniversary Social in April and assisted with the Special Olympics. More than 40 alumni and friends attended the Southern Iowa Chapter's third anniversary social. Guest speakers included Brenda Untiedt '00, '09 from Northwest's Office of Alumni Relations and Larry Mannasmith '71 from the Office of Enrollment Management. In addition, Stacy Gibbs from Southwestern Community College explained the new partnership between SWCC and Northwest. Drawings were held for raffle and door prizes, and more than $500 was raised for the chapter's scholarship. Also in April, 26 alumni and friends from the southern Iowa area attended the Encore performance of "Movin' Out" at the Ron Houston Center for the Performing Arts. Several chapter members also helped with the Southern Iowa Special Olympics in Creston. This summer, the chapter entered a float in area parades and worked at the Northwest booth at the Iowa State Fair.
Members of the Southern Iowa Chapter attended a national championship watch party, including Shane Stephens, Jane Briley '81, Brandon Gale, Dannie Stephens '74, Tiffany Gale '05, Judy Gale, Frank Gale, Erin Hudek Jondle '06, Scott Hartman, Jeremiah Jondle, Jaxson Jondle, Michelle Hartman and Rick McCampbell '75.
The Southern Iowa Chapter sponsored a watch party at the Windrow Sports Bar in Creston, Iowa, for the NCAA Division II National Championship football game. In January and February, chapter members attended performances in Northwest's Mary Linn Auditorium. The group has plans to participate in several events throughout the remainder of the year such as hosting an anniversary social, volunteering for the Southern Iowa Special Olympics, having a float in the Creston, Clearfield, Lenox and Diagonal parades, helping at the Iowa State Fair booth, holding a fundraiser for the chapter's scholarship fund, scheduling a family outing during the summer and being involved in the Northwest Homecoming parade.
The Southern Iowa Chapter participated in parades in Clearfield and Diagonal, Iowa, as well as the Lenox, Iowa, Rodeo parade this summer. The members used a large sign in the back of a truck and a banner to promote Northwest and their chapter. In August, chapter members assisted at the Northwest booth at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines. Plans are being made to attend several productions that are part of the University's Encore Performance Series.

The Southern Iowa Chapter celebrated its second anniversary on April 25 in Lenox, Iowa. The event, which included a catered dinner and program, was attended by more than 50 Northwest alumni and friends.
Chapter members also volunteered at the Special Olympics, attended the Northwest Encore performance of "Ring of Fire" on campus and hosted a golf outing. As in the past, the chapter will assist with the Northwest booth at the Iowa State Fair and plans to have a float in the Diagonal Labor Day parade.
The Southern Iowa Chapter participated in several local parades, proudly displaying the chapter's banner along the parade route. In June, members of the Southern Iowa and Central Iowa chapters enjoyed a relaxing evening at the Southern Hills Winery in Osceola, Iowa, followed by dinner at Terrible's Casino. Chapter members also assisted with the booth at the Iowa State Fair. The chapter plans to sponsor a trip to campus to attend an Encore performance.

The Southern Iowa Alumni and Friends Chapter participated in the Northwest Homecoming Parade. In April, the chapter celebrated its first anniversary with a social and by volunteering for the Special Olympics. Bev Schenkel, dean of enrollment management, discussed student enrollment at the social. The chapter has a good start on its scholarship fund and welcomes fellow Bearcats to join in the fun with other Northwest alumni and friends in southern Iowa.
