I’d like to give you a brief update on a potential project that will certainly be of interest to Northwest alumni and friends. During the past year, you may have heard that the Northwest Foundation is making strategic moves and is in the planning and development stages for expanding its facilities and is therefore exploring the concept of a new Alumni Center. This is indeed accurate information.
The Northwest Foundation has experienced significant growth in the last five years in terms of donor financial support, the scope of services offered and alumni involvement – due largely to Northwest’s first capital campaign – and additional growth is projected.
A facilities committee has been assembled consisting of members of the Northwest Foundation and Northwest Alumni Association boards of directors, many of whom are Maryville residents. After benchmarking with other universities, several sites on and near campus were explored by the facilities committee. The committee also considered the possibility of redesigning the Alumni House. When these findings were presented to the full Foundation Board, it was determined the best solution was to build a new facility to the immediate west of the Alumni House (at the corner of College Avenue and Munn Street) that would fulfill the Foundation’s three guiding principles: it will help raise money, it will help fulfill fiduciary duties, and it will help develop relationships.
It is important to note, the Foundation Board recognizes the Alumni House is a historic building that is ideal for small, elegant gatherings and is one of several distinctive structures on College Avenue. Therefore, while its future uses are yet to be defined, the Foundation is determined to preserve the Alumni House and use it in perpetuity for University-related purposes.
I understand the importance of keeping Northwest alumni and friends informed of the proposed project, and additional correspondence will be forthcoming. In the meantime, I encourage you to please review FAQ and other links within this site so you will be up to speed on this project’s background and tentative future plans.
Sincerely,
Steve Sutton ’71
Director of Alumni Relations
