The Northwest Board of Regents unanimously approved a policy that made Northwest a smoke-free campus, effective Aug. 1.
The policy was proposed by students. Surveys of students and their parents also showed strong support for the policy.
"This idea was generated by students, and we didn't ignore their efforts and desire to make Northwest a healthy and safe environment," Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Jackie Elliott said.
Smoking already is prohibited inside all facilities on the Northwest campus. By implementing the smoke-free campus policy, Northwest recognizes that having a smoke-free campus environment is an important public health measure and joins more than 400 U.S. colleges and universities that have enacted smoke-free campus policies.
