Students entering Northwest are required to have a reading, writing, and conversational knowledge of the English language.
If the student's native language is not English, then he or she is required to meet minimum score requirements on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic):
NEPALESE FRESHMEN APPLICANTS: Only a TOEFL score with a minimum score of 61 on the internet-based TOEFL may be accepted for undergraduate admissions.
Students who satisfy other admission requirements but not the language requirement can apply for admission to the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program and tentative acceptance to the university. Students will become eligible for regular university admission after they complete ESL and receive a satisfactory score on the Paper-based TOEFL (see requirements above) or after they provide new score reports that meet the admission requirement. However, students are encouraged to complete the ESL program once they start it.
