USDA official to deliver centennial lecture

MARYVILLE, Mo. –Dr. Anna-Mae Kobbe, director of family consumer sciences and nutrition for the United States Department of Agriculture’s Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service, will deliver the next Northwest centennial lecture at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, in the J.W. Jones Student Union Ballroom.

Kobbe’s speech, “Listening to the Voices: A Call to Public Service,” will explore her journey toward professional success, including her years as a family and consumer sciences major at Northwest.

On Wednesday, March 15, Kobbe plans to meet with faculty members and students before attending the annual Department of Family and Consumer Sciences Banquet, which begins at 6 p.m. in the union ballroom.

Kobbe joined the USDA in 1997 as the national program leader for family and human development. In that position, she implemented extension and research programs in partnership with land-grant universities nationwide.

In 2002, after the USDA created the new Division of Family Consumer Sciences and Nutrition, Kobbe became the agency’s first director. Working out of Washington, D.C., she supervises a staff of 15 and administers a number of federal programs.

Prior to entering government service, Kobbe was a tenured associate professor and extension family life specialist for the University of Tennessee Extension Service. She began her career with the Missouri Extension Service as a home economist.

After earning a B.S.Ed. degree from Northwest, she went on to earn a master’s degree in child and family development from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a Ph.D. in human ecology from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

Kobbe is a past national president of the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences and plays a leadership role in a number of professional and civic associations. She was recently chosen to receive the Citation of Merit from the University of Missouri College of Human Environmental Sciences during ceremonies scheduled for later this spring.

Kobbe was nominated as a centennial speaker by Northwest’s Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. The event is free and open to the public
