Maryville library to host centennial
book signing
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Dr. Janice
Brandon-Falcone, author of “Transitions: A Hundred Years
of Northwest,” will sign copies of her illustrated volume
of University history from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15,
at the Maryville Public Library.
Books will be available for sale during the
signing. The library is located at Fifth and Main.
A project of the Centennial Society, the
224-page history was published by Northwest’s Office of
University Relations. Cost is $50 plus sales tax, and all proceeds
go toward scholarships.
The book is also available for sale on campus
at the Bearcat Bookstore in the J.W. Jones Student Union and at
three downtown locations: The Student Body and the offices of
the “Nodaway News Leader” and the “Maryville
Daily Forum.”
Produced as part of the University’s
year-long centennial celebration, “Transitions” features
hundreds of photographs of the people and events that have shaped
Northwest since its founding in 1905. Many of the images have
never appeared outside private collections and the University
Archives.
An associate professor of history, Brandon-Falcone
has taught at Northwest since 1988. She wrote “Transitions”
at the urging of Tom Carneal, her former department chair and
a Northwest professor emeritus. The most difficult part of putting
the book together, she said, was deciding what to leave out.
“It isn’t a comprehensive history,”
Brandon-Falcone said. “Rather, it’s a selection of
key times, events and personalities. In that respect, there’s
still a lot of story left to tell.”
Colleen Cooke, formerly a Northwest publications
assistant, served as editor and designer for the project. Cooke,
who earned a master’s degree in English from the University
earlier this year, now works for Vance Publications in Lenexa,
Kan.
The Centennial Society, a group of University
alumni and friends, has raised funds for University Centennial
support.
