Alumni open house kicks off centennial
weekend
MARYVILLE, Mo. –
A special 100th birthday weekend gets
underway on the Northwest campus at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9,
when the Office of Alumni Relations will host a Centennial Back
to School Open House in College Park.
Northwest alumni and friends attending the
open house will be able to purchase food throughout the event,
and a number of emeriti faculty are expected to be on hand to
reminisce with former students.
The open house is the first event of an
activity-filled weekend that officially marks the beginning of
the University’s centennial year.
In order to better serve alumni and other
campus visitors, the Bearcat Bookstore will have shirts and other
Northwest logo items available for sale at the open house. For
those planning to return to campus the following day, the bookstore
will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at its regular location
in the J.W. Jones Student Union.
Courtesy RSVPs for the open house can be
made by calling (660) 562-1248 or via e-mail to alumni@nwmissouri.edu.
Admission is free.
A magic and variety show, “A Night
of Illusion,” follows the gathering at 8 p.m. in the Performing
Arts Center across the street from the park.
Centennial activities planned for Saturday,
Sept. 10, include dedications of two new campus landmarks. At
9 a.m. University officials will officially open Centennial Garden
in the courtyard behind South Complex. A second ceremony at 10
a.m. will be held at the recently installed commemorative statue
near the union’s main east entrance.
At 1 p.m., the Bearcat football squad plays
the Bulldogs of Truman State University in the Centennial Bowl.
The winner takes home the Hickory Stick, believed to be the oldest
traveling trophy in NCAA Division II play.
