Student body elects Homecoming royalty

The Northwest student body crowned its 2008 Homecoming royalty Thursday, Oct. 16, following opening night of the annual Variety Show in the Performing Arts Center on campus.  

This year’s queen is Kelsey Luers, a senior accounting major from Beatrice, Neb., who was sponsored by the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. 

Luers is a member of the Phi Mu sorority, Accounting Society, Order of Omega, Delta Mu Delta, Cardinal Key, Society of Presidential Scholars and the Northwest Dance Company. During her undergraduate career at Northwest she has served as a Student Mentor, Peer Advisor and was  named a spring 2009 intern with PricewaterhouseCoopers. Following graduation, Luers plans to pursue a master’s degree in business administration. 

Brent Ussary, a senior international business and management major from Agency, was elected Homecoming king. He was sponsored by the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, to which belongs. Ussary is also a member of the Student Senate, Order of Omega, Mortar Board and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Following graduation, he plans to pursue a master’s degree in business administration in preparation for a career in international banking. 

During their reign as Homecoming royalty, Luers and Ussary were to ride in the Homecoming parade on Saturday, Oct. 18, before being introduced at the football game between the Bearcats and the Fort Hays State Tigers that afternoon. 

The remaining nominees for king and queen now become members of the 2008 Northwest Homecoming court. They are: 

Queen’s Court: 

Amanda Davis: Senior elementary education and Spanish major, Omaha, Neb.
Organizations: Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority, Northwest Ambassadors, Omicron Delta Kappa, Blue Key, Cardinal Key, Mortar Board, Order of Omega and Up ‘til Dawn.
Plans: To pursue a career in elementary education in Omaha.
Sponsor: Up ’til Dawn fundraising campaign to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. 

Megan Schmidt: Senior agricultural education major from Trenton.
Organizations: Alpha Tau Alpha (agriculture honorary), CFFA, National Association of Agricultural Educators, Delta Tau Alpha (agriculture honorary), Block and Bridle, Student Missouri State Teachers Association, Peer Advisor.
Plans: To pursue a career teaching agriculture, ultimately at the college level.
Sponsor: Alpha Tau Alpha and CFFA.  

Megan Victor: Senior secondary education major from Omaha, Neb.
Organizations: President of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority, supplemental instructor for American government and politics, Order of Omega, Talent Development Center staff member.
Plans: To earn a master’s degree in history before pursuing a career as a high school teacher.
Sponsor: Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity.  

Megan Walker: Senior re-professional zoology major from Memphis, Mo.
Organizations: President of Beta Beta Beta biological society and Cardinal Key; member of Alpha Sigma Alpha, Blue Key, Order of Omega, Student Ambassadors, Omicron Delta Kappa and Mortar Board; served as science SOAR Leader in 2007 and 2008. 
Plans: To Graduate studies in veterinary medicine.
Sponsor: Order of Omega.   

King’s Court 

Russell Langdon: Senior technical theatre major from Kansas City.
Organizations: Cardinal Key, Mortar Board, Student Ambassadors, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, president of Alpha Psi Omega honorary theatre society, United States Institute for Theatre Technology.
Plans: To earn a master’s degree in fine arts in lighting design.
Sponsor: The men and women of Alpha Psi Omega.   

Nathan Manville: Senior Chemistry (American Chemical Society) major from St. Joseph.
Organizations: President of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, Gamma Sigma Epsilon chemistry honor society, Order of Omega, Mortar Board, Cardinal Key, Omicron Delta Kappa and National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
Plans: To pursue a Ph.D. in medicinal chemistry.
Sponsor: Phi Delta Theta fraternity.   

Ryan Smith: Senior journalism/political science major from Independence.
Organizations: President of Phi Sigma Kappa; member of Order of Omega, Cardinal Key and Mortar Board; staff and on-air personality at KXCV/KRNW radio, personality and host/producer of Inside Northwest on Channel 8 TV; Interfraternity Council.
Plans: To pursue a broadcasting or journalism career.
Sponsor: Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity.  

John Strohm: Senior elementary education major with a  concentration in mathematics from Fort Calhoun, Neb.
Organizations: Order of Omega, Phi Sigma Kappa, former Peer Advisor, president of Northwest Student Ambassadors. 
Plans: To teach elementary school in the Omaha area.
Sponsor: Sigma Kappa sorority.
