Dr. Stephen Town, professor of music, authored eight book reviews over the summer that will appear in forthcoming issues of “The Choral Journal,” the official journal of the American Choral Directors Association. Town is the journal’s book reviews editor and also serves on the editorial board.
Books reviewed by Town include: “The Courage to Teach: Exploring the Inner Landscape of a Teacher’s Life” (by Parker Palmer); “The Singer’s Ego: Finding Balance Between Music and Life” (by Lynn Eustis); “The Conductor as Leader: Principles of Leadership Applied to Life on the Podium” (by Ramona M. Wis); “Beyond Singing: Blueprint for the Exceptional Choral Program” (by Stan McGill and Elizabeth Volk); “The School Choral Program: Philosophy, Planning, Organization, and Teaching” (by Michele Holt and James Jordan); “Evoking Sound: The Choral Rehearsal, Volume Two: Inward Bound/Philosophy and Score Preparation” (by James Jordan); “Edmund Rubbra: Symphonist” (by Leo Black); and “The Music of Lennox Berkeley” (by Peter Dickinson).
Town also traveled to London in July, where he conducted archival research at the British Library on the manuscripts of Edmund Rubbra and completed a paper on the composer’s Symphony No. 9, “Sinfonia Sacra,” Op. 140 (“The Resurrection”).
The paper is to appear in Town’s projected book, “Essays on British Choral Music,” to be published by Ashgate Publishing Co. Ltd.
