Storm damage update; stadium closed

In order to ensure the safety of the campus community, Bearcat Stadium has been closed until debris from this morning’s wind storm is cleared.

Northwest Emergency Coordinator Jerry Wilmes and Campus Safety Director Clarence Green reported shortly after 9 a.m. today that all power has been restored to campus, and that the National Weather Service has confirmed that a wet microburst occurred over Maryville at approximately 5:15 a.m.

Green and Wilmes said that a damage estimate should be complete by the end of the week and will be submitted to the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the University’s insurance provider.

Environmental Services personnel continued working this morning to clear debris, which included downed trees and limbs. The storm hit hardest on the west side of campus, where damage was reported to fences, bleachers and athletic equipment at Bearcat Stadium and other outdoor athletic facilities.

Most of the debris has been removed from streets and sidewalks, but students, faculty, staff and visitors to campus are advised to exercise caution and avoid any hazards that may remain.
