Richard Strauss fanfare to open Wind Symphony concert

The Northwest Wind Symphony conducted by Carl Kling, director of bands, will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, in the Olive DeLuce Fine Arts Building’s Charles Johnson Theater. Admission is free.

Odessa native and Northwest graduate student Harry Hamblin will guest-conduct the afternoon’s opening composition, Richard Strauss’ “Feierlicher Einzug der Ritter des Johanniter-Ordens,” or “Fanfare for the Solemn Procession of the Knights of the Order of Saint John.”

Commissioned by the order in 1909, the fanfare leads off a program consisting entirely of 20th and 21st century works, including “Nitro” by Frank Ticheli, “Bali” by Michael Colgrass and “Moon by Night” by Jonathan Newman.

The concert will conclude with Vincent Persichetti’s “Symphony for Band, No. 6,” a work in four movements.

Known as both a teacher and composer, Persichetti, was a major figure of 20th century American music whose compositions for concert wind band remain highly regarded. Written in 1956, the Symphony No. 6 is of particular note as a larger work that has become part of the standard repertoire.

The 60-piece Wind Symphony is the Department of Music’s premiere instrumental ensemble and has a repertoire consisting of standard and recent compositions embracing all styles and periods. It regularly commissions and premieres new works and performs with guest soloists and conductors of national and international prominence.

Kling joined Northwest as director of bands in 2004 and in that capacity leads the Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, Pep Band, Northwest Orchestra and Bearcat Marching Band -- the “Musical Pride” of Northwest. He also teaches courses in conducting, composition, arranging and marching band techniques.
