Debbie Psychoyos
Educator Debbie Psychoyos, founder and president of the ProEd Foundation of Panama, will deliver this year’s Ploghoft Lecture at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, in Charles Johnson Theater on the Northwest campus.
Psychoyos works with educators in Panama and other countries to provide authentic and enriching learning opportunities for all students. Her ProEd Foundation supports programs designed to further education reform; promote clean, safe and pleasant learning environments; and provide tutoring.
Recognized for her work in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), Psychoyos has extensive experience in training and coaching both academic and corporate clients. She earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Oklahoma (Panama Campus) in 1989 and from 1982-1992 served as a classroom teacher and, later, education specialist in Panama for the U.S. Department of Defense.
Psychoyos started the ProEd Foundation in 2001 and, in the years since, has also served as a TESOL professor at the Universidad Latina (Panama), an educational coach for Peterson Schools in Mexico and a TESOL symposium speaker at North Carolina State University.
Outside professional life, she is active as a community volunteer, children’s story-teller and fitness enthusiast, having run the New York City Marathon in 1998.
The Ploghoft Lecture Series brings speakers to Northwest who have compiled a distinguished record in promoting multiculturalism, diversity and educational excellence.
Hosted by Northwest’s College of Education and Human Services, the series is made possible through the generosity of Dr. and Mrs. Milton Ploghoft. Ploghoft graduated from Northwest in 1949, and his wife, Zella, attended Horace Mann Laboratory School, which is located in Brown Education Hall on the University campus.
