Atlapedia Online "Atlapedia Online contains full color physical and political maps as well as key facts and statistics on countries of the world."
Blank & Outline Maps "Collections of blank and outline maps to print out for educational or personal use at home or in the classroom" are available at this site sponsored by About.com.
Color Landform Atlas of the United States Shaded relief, county, and black and white maps of US states are available at this site affiliated with the Ocean Remote Sensing Group at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.
Excite Travel Driving directions, an interactive atlas, and personalized maps are available here for free.
Global Land Environments These maps chart historical climate information about the earth.
Map Machine National Geographic's Map Machine utility includes three sections:
  • Dynamic Maps--including political, physical and cultural, climate and weather, census, street, and historic maps.
  • Atlas Maps--including the same categories as those listed above.
  • Flags and Facts--including maps that profile national characteristics and facts.
  • MapQuest This comprehensive site provides travel guides, trip planning tips and information on places and regions worldwide.
    Maps on Us Maps on Us will draw a map showing a specific location or map out a route for travel.
    Maps.com This site provides a limited number of free political, topographic, and physical maps. The About Maps.com page describes the larger scope of this site that is available by subscription.
    Perry-Castaeda Map Collection The University of Texas at Austin General Libraries have scanned a number of maps related to United State history. Information about this collection is available on the Frequently Asked Questions page.
    TopoZone This "interactive topo[graphic] map of the entire United States" "lets you create custom topographic maps and download them right to your desktop."
    US Gazetteer The US Census Bureau maintains this site. The resource allows the user to look up a particular United States city and retrieve population, census and zip code data. Tiger maps of city areas are also available at this site.
    World Factbook The World Factbook offers users access to online country and world region maps. The purpose, background and rationale for this resource are available on the History of the World Factbook page.
