Almanac
of American Politics
This book describes the
senators, representatives, and governors of each state. It also provides information
about their records, election results, states, and districts. Information
included about each area encompasses population; race and ethnic origin; age;
unemployment; registered voters; political lineup; presidential vote; biographies
of each governor, senator and representative; group ratings (as explained
in the "Guide to Usage" at front of the volume); election results;
campaign finance; and key votes of the current Congress. A Web site that updates
the information in this work is available. To access the Web site, ask for

at the Polls: A Handbook of American Presidential Election Statistics
This set of
volumes reports American electoral behavior in presidential elections beginning
with the 1920" election and continuing through the 1996 election. "Both
volumes follow the same pattern of organization: a front section containing
national summary tables of the state-by-state vote and electoral college vote
for each of the elections; a chapter for each state beginning with a summary
page that sets out the statewide vote and electoral college vote in the state;
a county outline map; and the county-by-county details of each election. Each
decennial census is carried with appropriate voting data tables that include
the Republican-Democratic-Other breakdown, pluralities, and percentages of
total and major party votes for Republican and Democratic candidates."

the present. Each volume covers one four year cycle. "There are also
sections with the results of special elections[.]" There are also "50
chapters--one for each state. Each chapter begins with a profile sheet listing
the current governor, senators and representatives, followed by tables of
the statewide vote for president, governor and senator from 1946 or 1948 to
the present. Following this information is a map of the state showing its
counties and congressional districts for members of the House. Following the
map are the county-by-county tables of presidential, gubernatorial and Senate
elections."

This book includes

historical information about political parties, nominees for president, chronology
of presidential elections, the Electoral College, electoral votes, presidential
popular vote returns, presidential primaries, presidential candidate biographies,

work includes profiles of each state with details about the "state's
governor, composition of the legislature, and information about major cities.

Data Book: A Statistical Portrait of Voting in America, 1992
Although the introduction
to this book states that it is a biennial publication, the only volume currently
in print is this 1992 edition. It includes "charts and tables which show
the results of primary, general, and special elections . . . for the offices
of president of the United States, U.S. senator, U.S. representative in Congress,
and governor; plus information on voter registration and voter turnout. Data
are presented for states, counties, and congressional districts."
Encyclopedia
of the Republican Party; Encyclopedia of the Democratic Party
This set of
volumes includes information on issues and ideology; biographies of presidents,
vice presidents, losing presidential candidates, speakers of the house, as
well as other notable individuals; conventions; platforms; and elections.

Legislative Elections: Voting Patterns and Demographics
This volume
"contains five unique sets of analysis and data on state legislative
elections in the 1990s. . . . The first set . . . describes the strengths
(or weaknesses) of the geographic and socioeconomic power bases of each party
across states. Three sets of state-by-state analysis and follow: Michael Barone's
fifty essays analyzing how party politics have shifted in the 1990s; multicolor
maps for each state legislative body that define urban, suburban, and rural
districts; and tables for each state legislative body that show which party
won (and by how much) for each state election in the 1990s. The tables also
reveal the urban, suburban, and rural mix of each district, its wealth, its
extent of education, the reliance of its households on Social Security income,
and its racial mix. And, fifth, are special indices for each state body, also
shown in tables, which calculate the its average Democratic district and average
Republican district b demographic mix, income level, degree of education,
reliance of households on Social Security income, and racial mix. These party-by
party indices are juxtaposed against the overall state average for the same
criteria. They also enable the reader to see instantly how closely the party
holding one seat fits the norm for that kind of seat or diverges from it."
