Background Information: Dictionaries, Encyclopedias and Handbooks
Use these sources to define terms and concepts in health, physical education, recreation, and dance (HPERD). Also, locate important facts quickly with these sources. Consult encyclopedias at the beginning of a research project to obtain a concise overview of a concept, school of thought, or a particular person's contribution to the HPERD field.
The Dance Encyclopedia
This completely revised and enlarged edition is a virtual one-volume international reference library of the art and science of the dance. Hundreds of classic and modern dance works are covered with plot summaries, names of choreographers, designers, composers, original casts, musical detail, and dates of premiere performances.
Dictionary of the Sport and Exercise Sciences
This dictionary contains around 3,000 definitions for terms and phrases commonly used in the field of sports and exercise science. It was written to "promote the understanding and correct use of terminology" and "improve scholarly writing and familiarize students with the meanings of sophisticated terms to clarify, and perhaps minimize, scientific jargon."
Encyclopedia of Human Nutrition
This multi-volume set covers a wide variety of information in the field of nutrition, including the subjects of: "physiological aspects of nutrient and energy requirements by different population groups; measurement of dietary intake and nutritional status; nutrient composition of the main food groups; associations between diet, lifestyle and disease; clinical applications of nutrition to improve health; topical issues relating to the food processing industry; influences on food choice and eating behavior; nutritional guidelines and public health policies in both developed and developing countries; international aspects of food labeling, and a range of related topics in between these key subject areas."
Encyclopedia of Nutrition and Good Health
This encyclopedia provides current information on foods, food technology, food labels, vitamins, minerals, and major nutrients. In addition, there are discussions of food related conditions such as eating disorders, obesity, addiction, dieting and weight loss, food sensitivities and chronic degenerative diseases.
Encyclopedia of Sports Science
This encyclopedia aims to widen a reader's knowledge of science as it pertains to sports. It will answer two types of questions. One type of question is about the physics of sports. An example of this type of question is: What makes a curve ball spin? And the other type of question is about how the body functions when participating in sports. An example of this question is: How does exercise affect the aging process?
Encyclopedia of Women and Sport in America
The core of this encyclopedia are 140 biographies of significant American women athletes and descriptions of the sports they are associated with. Other entries include career options for women in sport. There are also entries describing women and sport in conjunction with various disciplines such as exercise physiology, biomechanics, health, physical fitness, history, and sports psychology to name a few.

This book provides insight on the effects of aging on the body, mind and soul. Topics such as exercise, health, disease, hearing, alcohol consumption, drug abuse, anxiety, depression, senility, and testing are included.
Health and Illness: A Cross-cultural Encyclopedia
Health and Illness examines the nature of three approaches to health care around the world - the biomedicine approach, the alternative/complimentary approach, and the traditional approach. The special emphasis of the encyclopedia is on health care in nonwestern cultures and on nonwestern health care approaches in Western cultures.

Consisting of five different sections, this book addresses human growth and development, strategies for preventing illness, and dealing with emergencies. Look for articles on aging, disease, treatments, and modern technology.
The New Wellness Encyclopedia
The second edition of this book expands and adds to the topics presented in the first addition. This all-encompassing encyclopedia includes vitamin charts, diet plans, discussions on weight control, as well as updates on environmental safety issues.
The Planned Parenthood Women's Health Encyclopedia
Planned Parenthood provides a comprehensive guide to diagnoses and treatments for women's health concerns. This book also contains an explanation of medical terms, summaries of controversial issues, and Web site listings.
Sports Leagues and Teams: An Encyclopedia, 1871 through 1996
This reference is a compilation of the leagues, franchises, teams, nicknames and playing facilities of the "major professional leagues" in various sports
Sports Rules Encyclopedia

Market Data Retrieval's CIC School Directories: Missouri
MDR's school directories are a comprehensive reference source for providing data on public school districts and schools, Catholic and other independent schools, and regional and county centers in all fifty states. Owens Library has MDR directories for Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Ohio.
Patterson's Elementary Education
This directory includes listings for 13,000 public school districts, 63,000 public elementary schools and 13,000 private and Catholic elementary schools in the United States. It includes directory information for kindergarten schools, primary schools, intermediate schools, elementary schools, middle schools and K-12 schools.
Patterson's American Education
This directory includes entries for 11,100 public schools districts, 28,000 public secondary schools, 4,600 private and Catholic secondary schools and more than 6,000 post-secondary schools in the United States. It includes directory information for middle schools, junior high schools, junior-senior high schools, high schools, K-12 schools and vocational-technical schools.

This index is a monthly compilation of abstracts or summaries of dissertations submitted to Proquest Information and Learning by more than 500 international institutions. Author, keyword, and subject indexing are available for Dissertation Abstracts International. Request an online search from 1993 to the present at the Library Services Desk.

PsycINFO contains journal article citations and article summaries from over 1300 psychology journals and the journals of related disciplines. This database contains references to articles about mental health and the psychological aspects of sport and recreation.

1990 Census of Population and Housing
This census contains selected statistical tables on educational attainment and school enrollment. A Web-based version is available at the US Census Bureau site.
The Condition of Education
The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) gathers and publishes information on the status and progress of education in the United States.
County and City Data Book
This series contains United States education statistics such as educational attainment and school enrollment focusing on counties and cities.
Digest of Education Statistics
The primary purpose of the Digest is to provide a compilation of statistical information covering the broad field of American education from kindergarten through graduate school.
Statistical Abstract of the United States
As the national data book, this volume contains a collection of statistics on social and economic conditions in the United States, including data on educational attainment and school enrollment.
Statistical Record of Health and Medicine
The Statistical Record of Health and Medicine is a comprehensive compilation of national, state, and municipal health and medical statistics. Topics that this volume covers include the health status of Americans, health care establishment, lifestyles and health, health expenditures and funding, and many more.

ETS Test Collection Catalog
This set includes both unpublished research instruments and commercially-available tests and questionnaires owned by the test collection of the Educational Testing Service.
Mental Measurements Yearbook

This web page allows you to access test reviews on almost 4000 tests "exactly as [they appear] in the Mental Measurements Yearbook series." The Buros Institute has "critically reviewed" over 2000 of these tests, which are all offered for purchase.Test Critiques
This set produces one volume a year containing approximately 100 test reviews annually. The indexing is not as extensive as Mental Measurements Yearbook, and the reviews are not as descriptive. To ensure complete coverage of any one test, consult both sources. To search for tests listed in Test Critiques use the ERIC/AE Test Locator.
