Background Notes
This is a collection of pamphlets developed by the U.S. Department of State
Bureau of Public Affairs that provide information about countries worldwide.
Each pamphlet profiles the people, geography, government, economy, and principal
political factions of a particular country.
Handbook of the Nations
The handbook includes sections on geography, people, government, economy,
communications and defense forces for 247 nations.
Illustrated Book of World Rankings
This volume covers geography and climate; vital statistics; population dynamics
and family; race and religion; politics and international relations; military
power; economy; finance and banking; trade; agriculture; industry and mining;
energy; labor; transportation and communications; environment; consumption;
housing; health and food; education; crime and law enforcement; media; the
world's cities; culture; women and global indexes. Over 190 nations of the
world are ranked in over 300 areas.
Statesman's Yearbook
This yearbook includes brief paragraphs about each country's history; area
and population; climate; natural resources; industry; foreign economic relations;
communications; justice, religion, education and welfare; diplomatic representatives
and a short bibliography.
World Factbook
This volume is put out by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and provides
brief information on the geography; people; government; economy; communication;
defense, etc. of the world
Keesing's
Record of World Events
This is an excellent source for current affairs; it provides information on
recent events, (country-by-country) - socially; economically; politically,
etc.
Economic Survey of Europe
This annual resource is written in paragraph form supported by tables and
figures. They look at current economic developments; economic reform; internal
and external balances of trade; and financial developments of European countries.
Europa World Year Book
These volumes contain tables of international comparisons along with basic
information on international organizations. The country profiles include location;
climate; language; religion; capital; recent history; government; defense;
economic affairs; social welfare; education and public holidays. The statistical
survey portion on each country includes area and population; principal towns;
vital statistics; agriculture; forestry; fishing; mining; industry; finance;
external trade; transportation; tourism; communications; media; and education.
There is also a directory section which includes names and address of the
government; legislature; political organizations; diplomatic representation;
judicial system; religion; press; publishers; radio and television; finance;
trade and industry; transportation; tourism; and atomic energy.
Government Finance
Statistics Yearbook
Detailed statistical tables are presented on central government revenue, expenditures,
lending minus repayments, financing and debt for 120 countries. The yearbook
includes the amount spent by the government on defense, education, health,
social security, recreation, agriculture, etc.
World Economic and Social Survey
Annually, this series reviews changes that have taken place in the international
economy. Regional and national developments are examined which include developments
in international trade and trade policy; impact of world economic situation
of social situation of developing countries; inflation and related indices
(e.g. CPI, income, GNP, etc.).
For an in-depth look at a specific country, the US government publishes a
series of books called the Area Handbook Series. To see if the
library has a recent area handbook for a particular country, check the library
catalog by title. For example, Brazil a country study
