Mutz, SR., the father of Austin and Harrison Mutz and Mrs. Robert Foster, operated the first bookstore on campus and graduated from the then Fifth District Normal School in 1908. His life and the lives of his wife and other family members have been deeply involved in the activities of this institution and have helped to build many of its traditions. After entering the oil business in 1913, Mutz provided employment for many students and, through his financial assistance, made it possible for many to attend college.

Deadline Deadline: Feb. 1

STERLING SURRY SCHOLARSHIP

The Sterling Surrey Scholarship is granted on the basis of academic excellence to an undergraduate student majoring in one of the areas of business or economics. An applicant must be completing their junior year and have a cumulative GPA of 3.50. The faculty scholarship committee screens applicants and recommends top candidates to the final selection committee.

The Sterling Surrey Scholarship honors the memory of Dr. Surrey, chairman of the Business Department from 1939 to 1961. Dr. Surrey left Maryville to accept a full professorship at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, but suffered a fatal heart attack in August 1962.

Dr. Surrey had a very distinguished career and left a lasting impression on his many students. Among his many contributions to Northwest Missouri State University was the founding of the first loan fund at the college in the 1940's - a time when very few loans and almost no scholarships were available. He was very interested in seeing that deserving students received financial aid.

Administered through the University's Educational Foundation, the Surrey Scholarship is the result of contributions from former students, faculty colleagues, and friends of the well-known educator. Paul Ross, a student of Dr. Surrey, organized and helped raise much of the money for this award. A major bequest was also made by the late Dr. Vane B. Lucas, one of several of Dr. Surrey's students who received the distinguished Heubner Fellowship at the Wharton School of Finance, University of Pennsylvania.
