Mathematics, Computer Science and Information Systems Scholarships

First-time Freshmen and Transfers: Most major-specific scholarships can be applied for by completing the Standard Scholarship Application in CatPAWS by Feb. 1, 2015.

Dr. Marvin D. Combs Memorial Scholarship

These majors may also be eligible for the following Dr. Marvin D. Combs scholarship:

Dr. Marvin D. Combs Memorial Scholarship [F] [C]

Available to first-time and continuing students who are graduates of high schools in Worth, Gentry, Harrison or Nodaway counties, who have declared a major in one of the disciplines housed in the College of Arts and Sciences and who are enrolled on a full-time basis at Northwest. This scholarship may be renewed by maintaining at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA.

Mathematics

Jean Jennings Bartik Women in Science, Technology, Engineering & Math Scholarship [C]

Awarded to a female declaring a major in the Computer Science and Information Systems, Mathematics, or Science. Recipient shall maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75 and financial need will be leading criteria.

George W. Barratt Math Scholarship [C]

Recipient shall be considered a full time student enrolled in at least 12 hours per fall and spring trimesters. December graduates may receive the award in its entirety during the fall session. Recipient shall have declared a major in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics with first preference given to a Mathematics Education major. Having met all over criteria, first preference will be given to recipients originally from the Northwest Missouri area. Strong preference shall be given to continuing students and particularly non-traditional students.

C F Gray Scholarship [C]

Contact Department of Natural Sciences, 660.562.1388, for application.

Candidates shall declare a major in chemistry, mathematics, or physics and they must attain junior or senior classification by the end of the current spring semester. Selection shall be by examination and personal interview (see exam announcement). Junior award winners may receive the scholarship for their senior year if they maintain a GPA of 3.50 in mathematics and science, and an overall GPA of 3.00. The exam will be held on the first Saturday in February.

Marvin Gutzmer Scholarship Fund [C]

Sophomore or junior mathematics major with 3.00 cumulative GPA. Must show promise and ability in area and financial need.

Thomas Webb Harvey Memorial Scholarship [C]

Sophomore or junior mathematics majors may apply. Based on ability and promise in mathematics.

Robert Lilley Memorial Scholarship [C]

Contact Department of Natural Sciences, 660.562.1388, for application.

Candidates shall declare a major in chemistry, mathematics or physics. Eligible students shall take all coursework at Northwest and may receive scholarship for any year provided the student maintains a cumulative GPA of 2.50 in chemistry, mathematics and physics and a cumulative GPA of 2.00. Students taking the Gray Scholarship exam will be given first consideration.

Forrest G & Joan B Lowe Scholarship [F][C]

Recipients shall have elected a major in either mathematics or physics with a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA. Chosen from the following areas in order as they appear: Gilman City High School, Gilman, Mo.; Northeast High School, Kansas City, Mo.; Maryville High School, Maryville, Mo.; then to applicants from any other school.

Math Olympiad Scholarship [F]

Awarded to top two individual senior scores in Mathematics Olympiad (held in March) who plan to attend Northwest. 

  • Award: $2,500 and $1,500

Ruth (Collins) McQuerry & Wayne H. McQuerry Memorial Scholarship [C]

The recipient shall be enrolled full time and have declared a major in Natural Sciences and/or Mathematics maintaining a 2.75 GPA. First preference shall be given to a Nanoscale-Physics and/or Mathematics major. Preference shall also be given to a Missouri high school graduate. Academic achievement and financial need will be leading criteria.

Pi Mu Epsilon Scholarship [C]

Sophomore or junior math or statistics major. Based on performance in mathematics and statistics courses. Selected by faculty of department.

Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Information Systems Sophomore Scholarship [C]

Awarded to an outstanding mathematics major who has at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA, earned at least a B in Calculus I and has completed one semester at Northwest.

Denise Weiss Scholarship [C]

Awarded to a mathematics major with first preference given to a non-traditional full-time student pursuing a Mathematics Education degree, and then to continuing students pursuing the same degree.

Computer Science

Computer Science Alumni Scholarship [C]

Recipient shall be a rising junior or senior computer science major that has made significant contributions to ACM, computer science or the computer science/information systems area. Scholarship will also be considered.

Cerner Scholarship [C]

The Cerner Corporation awards a scholarship to a junior or senior majoring in computer science, management information systems, or interactive digital media-computer science programming with a 3.00 GPA.

Application must be requested through the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Information Systems, Colden Hall 2290, 660.562.1600.

Computer Science Academic Achievement Scholarship [C]

Rising junior or senior computer science major that has made significant contributions to ACM, computer science or the computer science/information systems department. Scholarship will also be considered.

Computer Visit Day Scholarship [F]

Awarded to a first-year student who declares a business education, business technology, computer science, interactive digital media - computer science programming, or a management information systems major and participates in the Computer Visit day. Must submit a high school transcript, and two recommendations covering academics, citizenship, leadership and record of extracurricular activities. Contact the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Information Systems or 660.562.1600 for additional information about this scholarship and the date of the Computer Visit Day.

Northwest DigEM Scholarship [C]

Recipient shall be classified as a University undergraduate Interactive Digital Media major that has made significant contributions to DigEM. December graduates may receive the award in its entirety during the Fall session.

Janet S. Gayler Memorial Scholarship [F][C]

The Janet S. Gayler Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a female freshman or sophomore majoring in computer science.

Business Technology/Business Education/MIS

Luther & Kathryn Belcher Scholarship [C]

To be eligible for the Belcher Scholarship, a business major must show evidence of achievement, exhibit high aspirations and goals, maintain a minimum of 3.00 GPA, and have been at Northwest for at least one semester. Preference will be given to a major in Business Technology who has financial need.

Ron C. DeYoung Scholarship [C]

Awarded to a full-time sophomore, junior or senior. One award for students actively involved with the Wesley Foundation pursuing any academic major with minimum 2.50 GPA. One award for students with minimum 3.00 GPA majoring in area of: accounting, finance, marketing, management, international business, mass communications, and computer management systems.

Vic and Frances Farrell Scholarship Fund [C]

Awarded to a full-time sophomore, junior or senior. Recipient shall maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00, have declared a major in the area of business and show financial need. Preference may be given to graduates of Worth County High School.

Robert Fraser Scholarship [C]

Awarded to business majors who are graduates of a public high school in St. Joseph, Missouri. Recipients shall have a minimum classification of sophomore and have a cumulative GPA of 2.75.  Financial need may be considered.

Graduate Business Education Scholarship [G]

The Graduate Business Education Scholarship is awarded to a middle or secondary business education teacher who is pursuing an MS Ed Teaching: Instructional Technology. The award is for summer tuition.  Preference is given to Missouri business educators. The scholarship application can be obtained from and must be returned to: Dr. Nancy Zeliff, Professor, Math/CS/IS Department

Raymond & Ruth McClurg Business Scholarship [C]

Recipient must be an upperclassman majoring in business with a minimum GPA of 3.00 and have completed a minimum of 27 credit hours at Northwest.

Martha Moss Scholarship [C]

The Martha Moss Scholarship is offered to a business student in her/his junior or senior year with a minimum GPA of 3.00. Preference will be given to graduates of Maryville High School.

Northwest DigEM Scholarship [C]

Recipient shall be classified as a University undergraduate Interactive Digital Media major that has made significant contributions to DigEM. December graduates may receive the award in its entirety during the Fall session.

C. & C. Taylor Scholarship-Pi Omega Pi [C]

Awarded to a senior Pi Omega Pi member, business education majors and graduate students pursuing a master's program in business education or instructional technology who are current or former Pi Omega Pi members. Scholarships are renewable.

  • Award: Full-time students are awarded at least $300 each trimester. Part-time students are awarded tuition scholarships per hours enrolled.

Monica G. Zirfas Scholarship [C]

Awarded to a student enrolled in the Two-Year Office Systems program. Students of good moral character, with excellenct academic standing, having at least a 2.50 GPA, who show potential for excellence in the area of administrative support, and who have completed a minimum of one semester at Northwest shall be considered for this scholarship. All other factors being equal, financial need may be the determining factor in the selection process.

Monica Zirfas served for many years as Administrative Assistant to the president of the university and as Secretary to the Board of Regents.
