Meet the Faculty

Dr. Jenny Rytting

Ph.D. English, Arizona State University

Jenny Rebecca Rytting came to Northwest Missouri State University two years ago as an assistant professor in the Department of English. Although she came most recently from Arizona State University, where she completed her Ph.D. in medieval literature (writing a dissertation on Middle English sermons and the late-medieval visionary Julian of Norwich), she considers herself to be a Midwesterner, having grown up in Columbus, Indiana. She moved to California with her family just before entering high school, and has since lived in Utah, where she attended Brigham Young University (receiving an Honors B.A. in English and writing an honors thesis on Jane Austen); Denmark, where she served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; and Nova Scotia, Canada, where she earned an M.A. in English from Acadia University (writing a master’s thesis on the young adult fantasy writer Robin McKinley). Her current research interests include medieval women visionaries, Middle English sermons, and the Pearl-poet. She primarily teaches courses in early British literature, Young Adult literature, and composition. She also plays the oboe in Northwest’s Faculty Woodwind Quintet. Although she enjoys visiting her family, which is spread out from Switzerland to San Diego and includes 7½ niblings (5 nephews, 2 nieces, and one on the way), she and her cat Stitch are glad to be in Maryville.
