Department-Funded Returning Student Scholarships

 

           

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

         Applicant must be a theatre or speech/theatre education major with the following cumulative GPA.

3.75 - 4.00 overall GPA  =  $200 per trimester
3.50 - 3.74 overall GPA  =  $150 per trimester
3.25 - 3.49 overall GPA  =  $100 per trimester
3.00 - 3.24 overall GPA  =    $50 per trimester

THEATRE ACTIVITY SCHOLARSHIPS

  • Applicant must be a theatre or speech/theatre education major.
  • Students must have, at the time of application, a minimum 2.6 cumulative GPA.
  • Scholarships will be awarded based upon past contributions and future potential

contributions to the University Theatre production programs.

SERVICE AWARDS

(open to all majors and minors in Dept. of Communication, Theatre, & Languages)

  • Students must apply for a specific titled position (or positions).
  • Students must have, at the time of application, a minimum cumulative 2.25 GPA.
  • Students will be responsible to the appropriate faculty member supervisor for meeting the

requirements of that position.

PLEASE NOTE: Service Award Scholarship money is given for the fulfillment of a set of major responsibilities under the direct supervision of a Northwest faculty or staff member or members. Failure to fulfill those duties may result in non-renewal of the award at trimester.  A review/evaluation (including a recommendation to renew or not renew the award for the following trimester) will be completed near the end of the trimester and shared with the student. A review/evaluation may also be completed at trimester midpoint.  Available positions and range of awards are listed below.  Not all positions will necessarily be filled. Award amounts vary and may be outside the specific estimated ranges listed below.  More than one person may be awarded the same position with similar or different job descriptions and/or financial amounts.


Costume Shop Supervisor

Award: $500 per trimester

This individual is responsible for overseeing and organizing all mainstage costume production activities (including building and acquiring costumes), assisting with lab series and other departmental costume needs, supervising and training student workers, keeping up costume shop materials, keeping the costume shop clean and organized, and assisting the faculty Costumer as requested.  The Costume Shop Supervisor is expected to work in the shop during all shop hours at least three days/week when shop is open AND as needed during heavy production times. Reports to faculty Costumer.

Assistant Costume Shop Supervisor

Award: $300 per trimester

This individual is responsible for assisting the Costume Shop Supervisor in all above duties, including assisting the faculty Costumer as requested.  The Assistant Costume Shop Supervisor is expected to work in the shop during all shop hours at least two days each week when shop is open (or arranged by the faculty Costumer) AND as needed during heavy production times. Reports to faculty Costumer.

Costume Shop Wardrobe Manager

Award: $300 per trimester

This individual is responsible for maintaining, organizing, and cleaning  the costume wardrobe area, supervising the costume rental program, assisting in locating stock costumes for departmental (main-stage, lab, and other departmental-related activities) productions, updating and maintaining the lobby vintage costume display and changing the display monthly, and assisting the faculty Costumer as requested.  The Costume Shop Wardrobe Manager is expected to work on wardrobe-related duties during all shop hours at least two days each week when shop is open (or as arranged by the faculty Costumer) AND as needed during heavy production times.  Reports to faculty Costumer. 

Properties Manager

Award: $200 per trimester

This individual is responsible for maintaining, organizing (including cataloging and returning) and cleaning small- and large-prop storage areas, repairing props, storage shelves and containers, assisting in locating stock props for departmental (main-stage, lab, and other departmental-related activities) productions, working with individual show Props Masters to acquire and/or build and maintain all show props, and assisting the faculty Scenic/Lighting Designer and faculty Technical Director as requested. The Properties Manager is expected to work on props-related duties during all shop hours at least one day each week when shop is open (or as arranged by faculty supervisor) AND as needed during heavy production times.  Reports to Scenic/Lighting Designer.

Paint Supervisor

Award: $300 per trimester

This individual is responsible for painting/supervising painting of scenery for all mainstage productions as assigned by faculty Scenic/Lighting Designer and faculty Technical Director;  maintaining, organizing and cleaning  paint and paint storage areas, paint supplies, and paints; assisting in meeting the needs (in paints and supplies) for other departmental (lab series and other departmental-related) productions; supervising and training student workers, and assisting Scenic/Lighting Designer and Technical Director as requested.  The Paint Supervisor  is expected to work in the shop during all shop hours at least two days each week when shop is open (or as arranged by the faculty Scenic/Lighting Designer) AND as needed during heavy production times.  Reports to Scenic/Lighting Designer.

Electrics Supervisor

Award: $500 per trimester

This individual is responsible for overseeing, organizing, and facilitating all electrics (sound and lighting) needs for all mainstage productions as assigned by faculty Scenic/Lighting Designer and faculty Technical Director; maintaining, organizing, and cleaning sound and lighting areas; assisting in meeting the needs of electrics for other departmental (lab series and other departmental-related) productions; supervising and training student workers; notifying the faculty Technical Director of any malfunctions or repair  needs in these areas, and assisting with maintenance and/or repair as instructed by the faculty Scenic/Lighting Designer and Technical Director.  The Electrics Supervisor is expected to work in the shop during all shop hours at least three days/week when the shop is open AND as needed during heavy production times. Reports to Scenic/Lighting Designer.

Assistant Electrics Supervisor 

Award: $300 per trimester

This individual is responsible for assisting the Electrics Shop Supervisor in all above duties, including assisting the faculty designers as requested.  The Assistant Electrics Shop Supervisor is expected to work in the shop during all shop hours at least two days each week when shop is open (or arranged by the faculty Supervisor) AND as needed during heavy production times. Reports to Scenic/Lighting Designer.

Scene Shop Supervisor

Award: $500 per trimester

This individual is responsible for overseeing, organizing, and facilitating (including building) scenic needs for all mainstage productions as assigned by faculty Scenic/Lighting Designer and faculty Technical Director; maintaining, organizing, and cleaning the scene shop and related areas; organizing shop production activities, assisting in meeting the scenic needs for other departmental (lab series and other departmental-related) productions; supervising and training student workers, keeping up shop materials, and submitting periodic reports to and assisting the faculty Technical Director and faculty Scenic/Lighting Designer as requested.  The Scene Shop Supervisor is expected to work in the shop during all shop hours at least three days/week when the shop is open AND as needed during heavy production times. Reports to faculty Technical Director. 

Assistant Scene Shop Supervisor

Award: $300 per trimester

This individual is responsible for assisting the Scene Shop Supervisor in all above duties, including assisting the faculty Technical Director and Scenic/Lighting Designer as requested.  The Assistant Scene Shop Supervisor is expected to work in the shop during all shop hours at least two days each week when shop is open (as arranged by the faculty Technical Director) AND as needed during heavy production times.  Reports to faculty Technical/Director.

Publicity Manager

Award: $200 per trimester

This individual works closely with the faculty Publicity/Front of House Coordinator in contacting appropriate publicity outlets, writing top-quality promotional material/press releases for all departmental shows (mainstage and other), developing and securing posters and programs for all mainstage shows, creating feature articles and setting up publicity photos, making contacts with television/radio and other media; developing/distributing season and individual mainstage posters; arranging for Student Union displays, lobby displays, table tents in the Union cafeteria, and other public relations campaigns; creating and developing innovative public relations ideas;  and assisting the faculty Publicity Coordinator as requested.  Reports to faculty Publicity/FOH  Coordinator.

Box Office/House Manager

Award: $200 per trimester

This individual works closely with the faculty Publicity/Front of House Coordinator in securing, organizing and supervising ushers and overseeing all front of house activities for all department mainstage productions.  Additional duties include cleaning, organizing, and maintaining box offices, submitting final box office reports, and assisting with box office organization and availability to the public.  This position is also responsible for developing (and or coordinating) creative and inviting lobby displays for the three mainstage shows, including arranging for company photos for the lobby.  This person is also responsible for ensuring that the entire "house" area [including lobby (including plants, lobby curtains, trash cans, tables, chairs, displays, etc.) and seating areas] are clean and organized, and for assisting the faculty Front-of-House Coordinator as requested.  Reports to faculty Publicity/FOH Coordinator. 

Recruitment/Scholarship Manager

Award: $200 per trimester

This individual works closely with the Theatre Program Director, the CTL department  office manager, and the theatre graduate student in preparing recruitment posters/materials/information; mailing those materials to students and high school programs; responding to and keeping record of  inquiries from prospective students; organizing, preparing and mailing materials for new-student scholarship auditions; preparing, organizing, and facilitating all scholarship activities (including on-campus freshmen scholarship auditions); creating and developing innovative recruitment ideas; maintaining files on all scholarship/recruitment activities; providing the Director of Theatre with an annual report on all of the above activities; and assisting the Director of Theatre and Department office manager on recruitment/scholarship matters as requested.  Reports to Theatre Program Director.

Videographer/Historian

Award: $200 per trimester

This individual is responsible for videotaping/filming all Theatre Northwest shows (including lab series), taking production and rehearsal still photographs at all lab series shows and rehearsal photographs at mainstage shows, and assembling them into a scrapbook or other approved display; taking  and printing  individual photos of mainstage company members for lobby display; assisting the Scenic/Lighting Designer in photographing mainstage shows, videotaping/filming acting/directing class scenes, videotaping/filming other classroom projects and department activities as assigned by the Scenic/Lighting Designer or the Director of Theatre (including, if assigned, a project for Theatre Appreciation where a 3-5 minute-scene from a selected mainstage show is chronicled on video throughout the production process), and creating and implementing creative means to create a history of the program (including working with the department web manager to develop a department archive).  This person Reports to Scenic/Lighting Designer.

Department Public Relations Manager

Award: $200 -$300 per trimester

This individual is responsible for preparing and mailing alumni newsletters, maintaining a current alumni mailing list,  supervising alumni files/activities, planning/coordinating department special events (including the dept banquet), writing copy for the department web page, photographing department events, maintaining up-to-date information about all department activities, and assisting the department secretary on alumni/web matters as requested.  Reports to department (Wells Hall) secretary.

Scholarship awards amounts are approximate and are subject to availability of funds.

Robert Bohlken Scholarship

$100 per trimester

The Robert Bohlken Scholarship is awarded to a speech/theatre education major or a speech communication major on an annual basis.  Recipients must be of at least sophomore standing with a grade point average of 3.0 or better.  Consideration will be given for academic achievement, participation in forensic/theatre activities and departmental service. 

Donald K. Carlile Memorial Scholarship

$125 per trimester

The Donald K. Carlile Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a communication, public relations or mass communication major on an annual basis. The applicant must have at least junior standing at the time the scholarship will be used and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better. The applicants are judged on their academic performance, participation in journalism activities, financial need, character, and service to the University, especially through involvement in the Circle K organization.

C.E. Cook Drama Scholarship

$225 per trimester

This scholarship is awarded to a theatre major of junior or senior status who is of good moral character, possesses excellent academic standing, and shows promise for excellence in the area of drama.

George Hinshaw Scholarship

$200 per trimester

The George Hinshaw Scholarship is awarded to a speech communication major on an annual basis. Applicants should have at least sophomore standing with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0. Consideration will be given for academic achievement, participation in intercollegiate forensic activities, and in department and campus activities (especially Circle K) and organizations.

Joyce Fink Hook Scholarships

$300 per trimester

Two scholarships will be awarded each year: one to a theatre major and one to a speech/theatre education major. The applicant must have at least a 3.0 GPA, be an active participant in university theatre productions, and have the potential to make a significant contribution to the field.

Mary Jackson Scholarship

$375 per trimester

The Mary Jackson scholarship is awarded to a language major on an annual basis. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0. Consideration will be given for academic standing and financial need.

Public Relations Scholarship

$125 per trimester

This scholarship is awarded to a public relations major on an annual basis. This scholarship requires that the applicant has completed a minimum of 45 academic hours with a GPA of 3.0 or better. Consideration is given for involvement in PRSSA and/or Lambda Pi Eta. Must show financial need.

Theatre Gold Star Scholarships

$175 per trimester

Two or more scholarships will be awarded to theatre or speech/theatre education majors each year with an equal distribution among classes (senior, junior, and sophomore) when possible. This scholarship requires that the applicant must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 and must model for others those attributes of character and service expected of an educated professional. Consideration will be given to those who intend to pursue advanced degrees in theatre or to teach theatre in the public school system or higher education.

John H. Walker Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a language major or minor that is eligible to enroll in a Modern Languages class beyond the first-year level.
