Shagbark Hickory

Carya ovata

Native. Leaves 8-14 inches long with five leaflets. Mature trees have distinctive shaggy bark curling out at the ends, believed to be an evolutionary adaptation that keeps squirrels away from the nuts. Height to 90 feet.
