A Message from the President
Dear Foundation Board Members:
It’s been more than a month since I communicated with you regarding Northwest’s realignment of academic programs in addition to other program and personnel changes in response to the continuing shifts across higher education. Since that time, our campus and community have experienced a range of healthy emotions, and rightly so. I’ve heard directly from many of you and other Northwest alumni and friends, and in nearly every case, individuals have expressed their support and concern as well as an understanding that change is inevitable.
Although this plan equates to nearly $2 million in reductions, there is still much to be done.
We will continue to evaluate what is essential, what is important and what is elective and embrace opportunities for collaboration and efficiency. We must keep at the forefront Northwest’s mission, vision and values.
And let us not forget: in the past two years combined, Northwest has already addressed 12.2% ($3.77 million) in decreases to budget appropriations, and through that, we have made significant progress in strengthening our financial position while holding the line on tuition and protecting positions.
Certainly, tough decisions have to be made, and it’s important for you, as Foundation Board members, to know: Northwest remains committed to providing an affordable and accessible education for its current and prospective students. Northwest has not – and will not – make up for funding gaps on the backs of our students. As the funding structure for higher education evolves, private gifts are more important than ever. Each of us must understand our essential role in ensuring Northwest’s ability to produce many more generations of proud Bearcats.

Welcome Carma Kinman
I came to Maryville as a student, planning to stay for four years and 32 years later I am still here! I was fortunate to join the Northwest Office of University Advancement as the executive secretary in November of 2011. Before joining the Northwest Advancement office, I worked as the Medical Staff Coordinator at St. Francis Hospital & Health Services.
I have heard wonderful things about the Northwest Foundation Board and am very excited to get acquainted with you all at the meeting on April 26 and 27.
